Given that December is Southern California’s coldest month, the bats have to devise survival mechanisms, too.

Bats prey on small insects, especially moths and flies. When the cold weather sets in, insect activity declines sharply, so the bats start migrating to warmer areas with an abundance of food while others enter into a state of torpor or hibernation.

How do bats prepare for hibernation?

When in hibernation, most bats remain inactive, as they’re in the state of self-preservation. A bat in the torpor state has its metabolism slowed down to conserve energy. Additionally, the heartbeat slows down to 10 beats a minute.

In this state, lots of energy is conserved, and the flying mammals can survive for up to six months depending on the grams of fat stored in their bodies. By the end of the cold weather, they’ll have lost up to half their body weight.

Where bats hibernate

During the cold months, bats move into secluded dark places where they curl up like little balls in hollow trees, caves and other isolated areas. An abandoned building where they’re not likely to be disturbed is also a good hibernation space.

However, they can also live near humans — for example, in the ceiling of a home. Others will look for a warm vent or pipe and hibernate just next to it. If this happens in your home, you’ll need professional bat removal services.

Telltale signs there are bats in your home

If bats in your home become active at any time, you should hear some scratching sounds. It’s possible to hear fluttering if they’re hiding in a wall void or attic during the cold season as they fly from place to place within the structure.

Additionally, you may hear some squeaking sounds as they communicate. Another sign to look out for is black, dry rice-grain-size bat droppings.

Like other mammals, bats have sebaceous glands, and you might note little gray stains or rub marks after they have squeezed into a tight location.

Safe bat removal services in Los Angeles

For over 20 years, Animal Capture Wildlife Control has been offering animal removal services for homes while ensuring the safety of families and animals alike.
