Pest Squirrel Removal From Home, Attic, & Walls

Squirrel Removal Experts in Southern California

The California Ground Squirrel is one of many species found in the western United States. This rodent thrives in attics, walls, chimneys, and other hiding places. There are many dangers associated with squirrels being too close to or in your home, but our local wildlife removal professionals provide expert squirrel removal from their preferred hiding spots.

Dangers of Squirrels In Your Home

Squirrels have adapted quite well to human environments. They often use structures for shelter and nesting. Aside from being noisy and bringing in flammable nesting materials, squirrels can chew on wires, creating further fire and electrical hazards. Often, squirrels get inside by gnawing through materials on the exterior of your home. This can leave your home vulnerable to water leaks and flooding, while squirrels can also ruin your attic insulation, which can affect temperature regulation and increase your energy bills.
Squirrel feces smells bad and can transmit diseases. One of them is leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can cause flu-like symptoms, serious respiratory problems, and death. Squirrel feces can also transmit salmonella. Since squirrels are preyed upon by raccoons, rattlesnakes, foxes, weasels, and other pests, their presence increases the risk of other animal infestations.

Squirrel Biology

Most squirrels weigh about a pound and are 12 to 18 inches long. They have a mix of gray, brown, and white fur with a bushy tail. Usually living in burrows, squirrels breed year-round, with peak times in winter and summer. They give birth to two to four young at once and raise them in nests. Squirrels typically feed on nuts, fruits, seeds, and fungi.

Types of Squirrels Found in L.A.

  • California Ground Squirrel: Recognized for mixed gray, light brown, and dusky fur, it burrows in the ground and feeds on acorns, seeds, fruits, mushrooms, and insects. It hibernates for much of the year, yet damages ornamental plants, gardens, and plastic sprinkler heads.
  • Western Gray Squirrel (Sciurus griseus): At about 22 inches long, it weighs from 1.5 to 2 pounds and lacks the spots, flecking, and stripes often associated with other types found in Los Angeles. Its diet is mostly acorns, pine nuts, and grain.
  • Eastern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger): The largest squirrels in North America, fox squirrels can weigh up to 3 pounds and grow up to 29 inches long. Their coat is usually light brown with an orange or reddish underside. Eating and hoarding a range of food items, they can become aggressive and even provoke dogs.
  • Tree Squirrel: Active during the day and all year long, it often runs through trees, on utility lines, and over the ground looking for food. Tree squirrels gnaw on telephone/electrical lines and cause damage to walnuts, oranges, apples, tomatoes, strawberries, and avocados.
